Director of athletics moving to new challenge
(Oct. 6, 2013) Michelle Healey has accepted a new role outside the university as director of the Recreation and Sport Division with the provincial government’s Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
Memorial’s director of athletics has been actively involved in leading the advancement of varsity athletics at the university since 1999. She has been the director of athletics since 2006.
Over that time she has developed a connection with the university that she will miss dearly, she said.
“Memorial has many great things happening,” said Ms. Healey. “I am proud that through collaboration and building relationships across campus we have been able to move athletics forward over the years.”
She also feels that the future at athletics at Memorial is bright.
“It is an exciting time for athletics at the university,” she said. “The report on the task force (reviewing varsity sports at Memorial) should position our teams with conditions for success. I can’t wait to watch it all unfold and I think it is a great opportunity for someone else to be involved.”
Ms. Healey felt that the opportunity within the provincial government was the right move for her career.
“I think this new opportunity will allow me to impact the recreation and sport delivery system in our province in a new way,” she said. “I’m excited to see how we can positively impact the lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians through recreation and sport activities.”
Ms. Healey will step down from her role at Memorial effective Oct. 24.
