Curlers head home 2-4 but with individual honours

The Memorial Sea~Hawks men’s curling team started strong at the CIS/CCA Curling Championship held in Edmonton last weekend but finished 2-4 against a deep field of curlers from across the country.

In the opening draw the Memorial team, skipped by Corey Schuh, beat Toronto by a score of 8-6. In their second match they improved to 2-0 with a 6-3 defeat over Calgary. They then dropped matches against Regina, Manitoba, Dalhousie, and Wilfrid Laurier.

Queen’s would upset the 2009 champion UPEI team in the final 7-6. They will now represent Canada at the 2011 FISU Games to be held in Turkey next February.

Schuh was named a second team All-Canadian skip. Third Stephen Ryan was named a first team All-Canadian. Ryan also won the R.W. Pugh Fairplay and Sportsmanship Award. It was the second time Ryan was recognized with both honours, as he received both in 2008. It was the third straight time that a Memorial curler won the sportsmanship award. This year’s coach, Ryan Ledrew, skipped the Memorial entry last year and won the award.

Ledrew felt the field was extremely talented. He said, “The curling was some of the best I have seen and that includes nationals and the Brier. We competed down to the wire. It was a great experience and we are looking forward to coming back next season and working for a podium finish.”

The other members of the Memorial team were second Chris Ford and lead Jamie Danbrook.
