Yvette Walton and Keith Taylor named honourary co-chairs for 2013 Subway AUS Women's Volleyball Cham

(Feb. 12, 2013 St. John's NL) Memorial University and Atlantic University Sport are pleased to announce that Ms. Yvette Walton and Mr. Keith Taylor have been named the honourary co-chairs of the 2013 Subway AUS Women's Volleyball Championship. The championship will take place February 15th to 17th at Memorial University's Field House. Ms. Walton and Mr. Taylor have both made a significant contribution to Memorial University and the sport of volleyball.

 

Yvette WaltonMs. Yvette Walton was coach of the Memorial women's volleyball team from 1965-1977. Ms. Walton was a former volleyball player and team captain at the University of Western Ontario. When she came to Memorial in September of 1965 she brought knowledge and skills that were not previously found in Newfoundland. Over the years many of the student-athletes she coached and taught went on to introduce volleyball programs of their own resulting in growth of the sport in many communities around the province.

 

Keith TaylorMr. Keith Taylor was a longtime faculty member in the School of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics at Memorial University while also acting as the first coach of the varsity men's volleyball team at Memorial. Mr. Taylor coached the varsity team from 1966-1985. In 1988 Mr. Taylor was inducted into the NL Volleyball Hall of Fame as a builder. His contribution to the development of volleyball in the province has helped create the foundation for the success of the sport in Newfoundland and Labrador today.

 

Memorial's Director of Athletics Michelle Healey was pleased to recognize Ms. Walton and Mr. Taylor as the honourary co-chairs.

 

She said, "Ms. Walton and Mr. Taylor have made a significant impact in the sport of volleyball and have helped build the programs at Memorial University. We are very happy to be able to recognize them in this way to say thank you for all of that they have done for the sport."

 

Ms. Healey is looking forward to the playing host to the championship.

 

"We have had success hosting events at Memorial in the past but this is the first time that we are playing host to the AUS volleyball championship. We are looking forward to showcasing some of Canada's finest student-athletes this weekend and we are hoping the local community will join us in helping give our Sea-Hawks a real home court advantage.", she said.

 

The 2013 Subway AUS Women's Volleyball Championship with begin on Friday evening with the quarterfinals taking place. The Sea-Hawks, the tournaments sixth seed, will play their first game on Friday evening at 8 p.m. against third seeded Moncton. In the other quarterfinal UNB (fourth seed) will play St. Francis Xavier (fifth seed) at 6 p.m.

 

Semi-finals will take place Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and will feature the top two seeds, Dalhousie (first seed) and Saint Mary's (second seed), and the winners of the quarterfinals.

 

The championship final will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
