Basketball Alumnus Clarence Sutton passes away
Clarence Sutton, a men’s basketball alumnus and former Memorial assistant coach, has passed away at the age of 46 after a battle with brain cancer. Mr. Sutton was well known in Newfoundland as a devoted coach and teacher.
Over the years he made a significant impact on the development of basketball in areas that, in large part due to his tireless effort, have developed some of the finest players in the province. He coached at Stella Maris High School in his hometown of Trepassey, St. John Bosco in Shea Heights and most recently at St. Kevin’s High School in the Goulds.
Mr. Sutton was an Athletic Honour Society inductee in 1989. He had
a successful playing career suiting up for Memorial. In the St.
John’s senior league he was a three-time MVP and six time
all-star.
Mr. Sutton also returned to complete his Master’s of Physical
Education degree at the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation,
graduating in 2008.
As a coach and teacher he passed along his love for the game of
basketball. He was known as a soft-spoken coach who cared about his
students and athletes. He will be remembered for instilling in
everyone he dealt with the importance of kindness and goodwill to
each other.
Mr. Sutton is resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 73
Commonwealth Avenue, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday
and from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday.
Funeral Mass to be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2009
from the Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Interment to follow in
Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
