Longtime Track and Cross Country coach Chris Pickard passes away
Chris Pickard, a longtime track and cross country running coach passed away on Thursday. Mr. Pickard coached more than ten Atlantic university championship teams during his time at Memorial and was recognized as the Atlantic university coach of the year multiple times.
Mr. Pickard came to Newfoundland and Labrador in 1976 and was instrumental in the success of the 1977 Canada Games. He was a pioneer in Athletics in the province and is a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association Hall of Fame.
Mr. Pickard was also a part-time instructor at the School of Physical Education and Athletics at Memorial. His impact on varsity athletics at Memorial was significant and he played a vital role in the development of a successful track and cross country program. As a coach he had a lasting impact on a large number of student-athletes.
