Sea-Hawks soccer players win major conference awards

Atlantic University Sport has announced the 2010 men’s and women’s soccer major award winners and four student-athletes from Memorial University have received honours. For the first time in Memorial’s history both a male and female Sea~Hawk have won the AUS Student-Athlete Community Service Award. Samantha Hansford, a fifth year midfielder, and Andre Le, a fifth year fullback, both from St. John’s have earned the award based on their tireless community efforts. Steven DeLong, a second year striker with the men’s team, earned a first team all-star nod while fifth year defender Ashley Dawe, with the women’s team, earned a second team all-star nod.

Andre Le: AUS Student-Athlete Community Service Award

Le, a fifth year defender with the Sea-Hawks who has been recognized as an academic all-Canadian in his four previous years of study, becomes the first Memorial recipient of the men's soccer Student-Athlete Community Service Award, which has been presented since 2006.

Andre, who completed his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in four years, achieving Dean's List status each year, is currently enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine and has been heavily involved in community activities throughout varsity athletics career.

He volunteered over 125 hours with St. John Ambulance Division 321 since 2008, is a volunteer coach for Special Olympics since 2008 where he has coached bowling, floor hockey, and swimming. He also volunteered as a judge at the Newfoundland Regional Science Fair in 2009 and 2010 and has also been involved with ESL Conversation classes conversing with foreign students in order to improve their English speaking skills and has volunteered with children's liturgy at his local church.

Andre is also involved with volunteering through the Memorial soccer team, helping out with local events such as the annual Tely 10 and volunteering at the St. Mary's School Fall Fair and Spring Fairs. He has been a participant in the Rotary Read Along program reading to children at numerous schools since 2009 and is also a member of the MUN varsity athlete's council.

"Andre has emerged as a quality leader within our men's soccer program and truly leads by example," says Memorial Director of Athletics Michelle Healey. "His ability to juggle the multiple demands on his time and to achieve success as an athlete, student and community volunteer is nothing short of amazing. He is an outstanding ambassador for Memorial and is truly deserving of the Student Athlete Community Service Award."

Samantha Hansford: AUS Student-Athlete Community Service Award

Hansford, a fifth year midfielder and co-captain with Memorial, becomes the second consecutive Memorial recipient of the Student-Athlete Community Service Award, which has been presented since 2007. Former Sea-Hawk Leslie Pope was recognized in 2009.

Samantha's current volunteer activities include helping with the "Turnings Addiction Services" program for convicted offenders, where she attends volunteer circle groups with offenders on a weekly basis to listen to their current issues or concerns in their life while giving them opinions that can help prevent them from reoffending.

She also volunteers with the Medical Genetics Centre with Eastern Health, the Boys and Girls Club of St. John's after school program and as an assistant coach for 2010-11 girls under 14 provincial soccer team. Hansford also participates with numerous cancer research fundraisers, including the Terry Fox Run (2010) and Relay for Life (2004-2007, 2009).

"Samantha has matured into a leader among her peers since first joining the Sea-Hawks program five years ago," says Memorial head coach Walt Mavin. "Her leadership extends both on and off the field. In addition to a full course load in a challenging Biochemistry program and fully committing to the Sea-Hawks program as a co-captain in 2010, Samantha has also lead the way for the team in terms of her community involvement and initiatives. She brings the same passion and integrity in whatever she takes on - her academics, soccer and very worthwhile community service work."

Steven DeLong: First Team AUS All-Star

Second year striker Steven DeLong led Memorial in scoring with 6 goals in 2010, good enough for a tie for sixth place in the conference. The always dangerous DeLong was the focal point of the Memorial offense. DeLong used his mix of speed and agility to get free on the attack, firing the second most shots in the conference. The Yorkton, Saskatchewan native, and his team, were much improved in 2010. The Seea~Hawks saw an 11 point in the AUS standings over the previous year.

Ashley Dawe: Second Team AUS All-star

Ashley Dawe has patrolled the Memorial back line for five seasons, using a unique mix of talent and aggressiveness to keep opposing offences at bay. In 2010 Dawe was as steady as ever, leading the Memorial defense in her final year. The St. John’s native earned player of the game honours in four games throughout the season.
