Harris, Breen and Yetman named soccer all-stars

Three Memorial University soccer players were named all-stars in an announcement made today by Atlantic University Sport. Women’s soccer players Laura Breen and Malorie Harris were named first team all-stars while men’s soccer player Ryan Yetman was named to the second team.

Laura Breen was Memorial’s leading scorer with six goals in 2009 despite playing several games early in the season on the backline and battling injuries all season. The fifth year forward from St. John’s is a four-time conference all-star. She scored 39 goals in her varsity career and was named the AUS 2008 Player of the Year.

Joining Breen as a first team all-star was midfielder Malorie Harris. Harris, also in her final year of eligibility, is from Mount Pearl. During her five year varsity career Harris has scored 28 goals. She is a four time AUS first team all-star, and, in her rookie season, she was named a second team all-star.

On the men’s side Ryan Yetman was named a second team all-star for the first time as a Sea~Hawk. The team captain was last season’s team most valuable player. Yetman is a fullback from St. John’s in his fourth year with Memorial.

Iain MacLeod, a fifth year striker from Mount Pearl who plays with Mount Allison was also named a second team all-star.

The women’s soccer team begins play at the 2009 Subway AUS Women’s Soccer Championship this weekend in Mount Pearl. The first game for Memorial will be under the lights on Friday at the Smallwood Drive Recreation Complex at 6:15 p.m.
