Rookie Soccer Players Named Subway Athletes of the Week

Rookie soccer players Heather Williams and Steven DeLong have been named the Memorial University Subway athletes of the week for the week ending September 13th, 2009.

Rookie soccer player Heather Williams is the female athlete of the week for her performance during her first road trip as a Sea~Hawk this weekend in New Brunswick. The St. John’s native wasted no time notching her first AUS goal only ninety seconds into her first game against Mount Allison on Saturday. In the 61st minute Williams would again find the back of the net, giving the Sea~Hawks a 2-1 lead. Though it is very early in the season, Williams finds herself tied for second in the AUS in scoring with her two goals.



Steven DeLongMale Athlete of the Week

Major: Arts

First year forward Steven DeLong is the male athlete of the week for his performance in New Brunswick as the Sea~Hawks went 1-1 on the weekend to open the season. The native of Yorkton, Saskatchewan scored a goal in each game, the first two of his university career. On Saturday, he scored the first goal of the game and season for Memorial against Mount Allison. On Sunday, DeLong joined Zach Wade in scoring as Memorial edged Moncton 2-1 to notch their first win of the season. Though only two games have been played in the season, DeLong finds himself tied for the conference lead in scoring with his two goals.
