Harris and Helsby named Subway Athletes of the Week

Soccer player Malorie Harris and basketball player Mike Helsby have been named the Memorial University Subway athletes of the week for the week ending October 4th, 2009.

Fifth year midfielder and 2008 second team All-Canadian Malorie Harris has been named Memorial’s female athlete of the week for her performance during the women’s soccer team three game weekend road trip in Nova Scotia. Harris was a bright spot for the Sea~Hawks, scoring both goals in a 4-2 loss to the Saint Mary’s Huskies on Saturday, and adding two more goals in a 4-0 win over the Acadia Axewomen on Sunday. After a four goal weekend, Malorie finds herself tied for second in AUS scoring, and is back on track for another AUS All-Star season.

Rookie wing Mike Helsby has been named Memorial’s male athlete of the week for his performance at the University Hoops Showcase on the River in Miramichi, New Brunswick. Helsby, a native of Waterloo, made his Sea~Hawks debut on Saturday night, finishing second in team scoring with 13 points in a Sea~Hawks victory over Crandall University. Mike added 16 points Sunday morning and another 14 points Sunday afternoon in two more Memorial victories over St. Thomas University and Holland College. Look for Helsby and his teammates to keep things rolling when they take on the Sea~Hawks Alumni in two exhibition games this weekend as part of Memorial’s Exhibition Weekend.
