Mullaley and Shepherd Named Subway Athletes of the Week


Basketball players Erin Mullaley and Jason Shepherd have been named the Memorial University Subway athletes of the week for the week ending November 22nd, 2009.

Erin Mullaley is this week’s Memorial University Subway female athlete of the week for her performance in the Sea~Hawks two weekend victories over the Saint Mary’s Huskies at the Field House. On Saturday night, Erin went 5-7 from the field draining 13 points, and adding 5 helpers in the Sea~Hawks 64-61 win over the Huskies. On Sunday it was Mullaley who once again came up big for Memorial scoring a game high 15 points, with 9 of those coming from beyond the arc. Mullaley showed her leadership and experience draining a big three pointer putting the ‘Hawks up by three with 45 seconds remaining in the game. Mullaley went on to knock down two last minute free throws on her way to scoring 7 points in the final two minutes of play, as the Sea~Hawks defeated Saint Mary’s 54-51. This weekend Mullaley was rewarded for her hard work both on and off the court as she received player of the game honors in both victories, as well as on Saturday evening Erin was named the winner of the 2009 Nita Chambers Sutton Award.

Jason Shepherd is the Memorial University Subway male athlete of the week for his performance in the Sea~Hawks’ weekend split with the Saint Mary’s Huskies. Memorial’s team captain led by example on Saturday night scoring 20 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, and adding 7 assists as the Sea~Hawks picked up their first win of the season defeating the Huskies 79-77. Shepherd came up big for Memorial when they needed him most draining 14 points in the second half, 6 of which came in the final three minutes when the game was on the line. On Sunday Shepherd was named the Sea~Hawks player of the game for the second game in a row scoring 19 points, and adding 8 assists in Memorial’s final game before the break. Despite Shepherd’s 12 points and 6 assists in the second half, the Sea~Hawks were unable to hold on, this time loosing to the Huskies 80-75 in the final seconds of the game. Shepherd and his teammates will now take time off before returning for the second half of the season at home on January 9th when they host the St. Francis Xavier X-Men.
