Benson and Hynes Named Subway Athletes of the Week

Cross country runner Melanie Benson and soccer player Zach Hynes have been named the Memorial University Subway athletes of the week for the week ending November 1st, 2009.

Melanie BensonFemale Athlete of the Week
Melanie Benson
Team: Women’s Cross Country
Major: Business Administration

Second year runner Melanie Benson has been named the Subway Memorial University female athlete of the week for her performance at the AUS Championship in Halifax on Saturday afternoon. Benson, who came off the training squad earlier this month to compete at the UNB Invitational, had something to prove on Saturday, and that is exactly what she did. Disappointed in her result at UNB, Melanie had unfinished business on the trail and Saturday was her chance to redeem herself.
Benson was the first Sea~Hawk to cross the line in 15th place, in a time of 20:14, thirteen seconds faster than her last race. With her strong run, Benson and the Sea~Hawks ran well enough to defend their third place AUS finish.

Zach HynesMale Athlete of the Week
Zach Hynes
Team: Men’s Soccer
Major: Kinesiology

Zach Hynes of Memorial’s soccer team has been named the Subway Memorial University male athlete of the week for his outstanding performance in the Sea~Hawks final games of the season against St. FX. Down 4-0 late in the game on Saturday, Hynes was not willing to see his team lose without a fight and took it upon himself to get the team back in the game. Hynes scored three goals in the 77th, 79th, and the equalizer in the 88th minute as the team went on to tie the X-Men. Hynes’ performance showed his heart. Saturday’s hat trick gave Hynes a total of 4 goals on the season, the most by any Sea~Hawk in AUS play.
