Basketball players named Subway Athletes of the Week

Basketball players Vicki Thistle and Robbie Habib have been named the Memorial University Subway athletes of the week for the week ending February 28th, 2010.

Team: Women’s Basketball
Major: Kinesiology

Vicki Thistle is this week’s Memorial University Subway female athlete of the week for her performance in the 2010 Subway Atlantic University Sport Women’s Basketball Championships. After receiving a bye into the second round of competition, Thistle’s presence on the Sea~Hawks side was undeniable as she led the ‘Hawks in minutes played, scoring, and rebounding. Although Memorial would lose the game on Saturday versus Saint Mary’s, Thistle never let up in her effort on the court and delivered 19 points and 8 rebounds in the 77-56 loss. The St. John’s native has been one of Memorial’s top performers all season and continues to establish herself as a force in the AUS.

Robbie Habib
Team: Men’s Basketball
Major: Commerce

Robbie Habib is the Memorial University Subway male athlete of the week for his solid performance in the closing weekend series of the season against Acadia in Wolfville. The 6’4 sophomore forward has been one of the more constant players in terms of production on the season. In Memorial’s first match up on Saturday night, Habib picked his spots carefully and was aggressive on offence throughout the game, leading the Sea~Hawks in the 91-79 loss with a team-high 15 points and three three-pointers in a team-high 38 minutes of play. Despite the team’s early struggles in Sunday’s game, Habib was a key contributor in staying with the Axemen for the remaining three quarters. Though Acadia would not let go to their first quarter lead in the victory, Habib continued his unwavering production for the ‘Hawks with 13 points and 4 rebounds while knocking down another three shots from beyond the arc. The Sea~Hawks will surely be disappointed with ending the season with two more losses, but they must be encouraged by having this blossoming shooter on their squad ready to put in the work over the summer for seasons to come.
