Volleyballer and Wrestler Athletes of the Week

Sasha Wilkins is this week’s Memorial University Subway female athlete of the week for her performance on a weekend road trip to Sydney that resulted in two big wins for the Sea~Hawks over the Capers. The senior from Gambo came up huge in the first of two matches leading the team with 18 kills, 13 digs and 4 blocks in a t3-1 win. For an encore, she had a monster game for the Sea~Hawks posting 26 kills, 20 digs and 3 blocks to help lead her team to a crucial sweep over CBU. The wins improved Memorial’s record to 4-10, good enough for sixth in the AUS. The Sea~Hawks are now four points behind Moncton in the battle for the final playoff spot in the conference.
Rory Gillis
Men’s Wrestling

Major: Kinesiology
Rookie wrestler Rory Gillis is this week’s Subway Memorial University male athlete of the week for his pair of podium finishes. Gillis, a native of Antigonish, looked like a seasoned veteran winning a silver medal in the men’s 82kg weight class on Saturday at the UNB Open. On Sunday he competed in the Eastern Canadian Junior Championships in the 85kg weight class and captured a bronze medal. Gillis and his teammates will look to continue their momentum into the CIS Qualifiers which are back at the University of New Brunswick on February 12. At the qualifier the top two wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the CIS Championships in March hosted by Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
