Tomblin and Shepherd Named Subway Athletes of the Week
Swimmer Leah Tomblin and basketball player Jason Shepherd have been named the Memorial University Subway athletes of the week for the week ending January 24th, 2010.
Female Athlete of the Week
Leah Tomblin
Team: Women’s Swimming
Leah Tomblin is this week’s Memorial University Subway athlete of the week for her outstanding performance at the Jack Scholz AUS Invitational swim meet at Acadia this past weekend. With the stellar time of 2:21.96, Leah qualified for the CIS Championships later this year and set a provincial record in the 200m backstroke. Leah also had three other top three places this past weekend, finishing first in the 50m backstroke (31.50), second in the 100m backstroke (1:09.01), and third in the 50m butterfly (31.24). She also is a major part of the women’s relay team, which had three second place finishes on the weekend in 4x50m free, 4x100m free, and 4x50m individual medley. Now establishing herself as one of the best in the AUS, Leah looks to keep up this high level of competition as she and the Sea~Hawks head to AUS Championships in February at UPEI.
Male Athlete of the Week
Jason Shepherd
Team: Men’s Basketball
Major: Kinesiology
Jason Shepherd is this week’s Subway Athlete of the week for
his fantastic play in both games against the Dalhousie Tigers.
Jason is further establishinghimself as a team leader and as one of
the top players in the AUS. His 16 point, 7 rebound performance
earned him player of the game honours in Saturday’s loss
although his game goes beyond what will show on the stat sheet. Now
becoming more vocal and inspired in his play, Shepherd embodies the
work ethic and drive this Sea~Hawks team needs in order to
continuing moving forward. Dropping 24 points, 7 assists, and 6
rebounds in the second game of the series marks one of his best
overall performances, as the team is now heading down the stretch
of the AUS regular season. The Sea~Hawks travel to Cape Breton to
play a weekend series against the first place Capers this
weekend.
