Peddle and Grainger Named Subway Athletes of the Week

Volleyball player Angela Peddle and basketball player Justin Grainger have been named the Memorial University Subway athletes of the week for the week ending January 11th, 2010.

Female Athlete of the Week
Angela Peddle
Team: Women’s Volleyball
Major: Kinesiology

Angela Peddle is this week’s Memorial University Subway female athlete of the week for her performance in the Sea~Hawk’s weekend series against the Université de Moncton. On Friday, the Sea~Hawks notched their first win of the 2009-10 season, defeating Moncton 3-1. Peddle, a sophomore middle from St. John’s was named the Player of the Game in the victory. She played a well-rounded match, coming up with 12 kills. She also joined her teammates to put up a solid wall of defense at the net to thwart the Moncton attack. In Saturday morning’s 3-1 loss Peddle continued her strong play with another 11 kills. Look for Peddle and her teammates to continue to improve as they travel to Dalhousie for a series against the Tigers this weekend.

Male Athlete of the Week
Justin Grainger
Team: Men’s Basketball
Major: Business

Justin Grainger is the Memorial University Subway male athlete of the week for his outstanding all-around performance in this weekend’s series against St. Francis Xavier at the Field House. The 6’5 rookie forward has been a solid contributor for the Sea~Hawks. However, this weekend, with the team shorthanded, he took on a feature role against the top team in the AUS. Grainger was a source of offence in both games, averaging 13.0 ppg on the weekend, and scoring a team-high 16 points in Monday’s matinee despite running into early foul trouble. On Sunday night Grainger proved to be effective on both ends of the floor as he grabbed 5 rebounds and shot 7-12 from the field in a career high 36 minutes of court time. Although the Sea~Hawks did not notch a win against the X-Men over the weekend, they can find comfort in the promise shown by the high-energy slasher from St. John’s.
