Swimmers Leah Tomblin and Adam Harvey have been named the Memorial University Subway athletes of the week for the week ending Feb 8th, 2010.


Female Athlete of the Week
Leah Tomblin
Team: Women’s Swimming
Major: General Studies



Leah Tomblin is this week’s Athlete of the Week for her fantastic finishes at the Atlantic University Sport Championships. Having already qualified for CIS Champs two weeks ago, Tomblin still finished top three in all of her individual races. Tomblin took home the gold at AUS Champs in the100m backstroke with a time of 1:06.52. Leah also had two bronze medal finishes on the weekend; taking to the podium for the 200m backstroke and also setting a Memorial record in the 50m backstroke with a time of 31.47. The second year added to the impressive weekend for Memorial with the setting of a new provincial record of 8:58.13 in the 4X200m freestyle relay. Tomblin and company also earned Memorial a silver medal with the second place finish for the 4x100m relay. With this weekend’s outstanding AUS performance, Tomblin now is looking to continue her winning ways at the grand stage of CIS Championships Feb. 18-20.


Male Athlete of the Week
Adam Harvey
Team: Men’s Swimming
Major: General Studies


Adam Harvey is this week’s Athlete of the Week for his outstanding performance at the AUS Championship this past weekend at UPEI. Harvey’s strong finishes helped lead the charge for the Sea~Hawks team which came second overall with 66 points. Despite not qualifying for CIS Champs, this impressive rookie had a flurry of personal bests and record breaking times; including personal bests in 100m backstroke (1:00.97, 5th), 200m freestyle (1:57.37, 4th), and 100m freestyle (52.79, 6th). The Mount Pearl native was also a part of the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team which placed 2nd with a time of 7:58.25; marking the first time in over 25 years a team has finished under 8 minutes. He also led off for the 4x100m free relay with a personal best 53.05, while the team broke a provincial record with 3:33:65. As the season ends, this inspiring performance at AUS Champs gives Harvey much to look forward to in coming years.
