Victoria Ralph

Women’s Wrestling

Year: 3
Major: Kinesiology

Victoria Ralph is this week’s Memorial University Subway female athlete of the week for her outstanding performance at the CIS Championships held at Lakehead University last weekend that landed her a Bronze medal. On Saturday, Ralph outwrestled Bethany Fuzzan of the University of Alberta en route to winning a CIS bronze medal in the 55kg weight class. In the match that decided it all, Ralph came out determined in the first round earning a win over Fuzzan. The second round would start off much the same as the first, as she was the first to strike again giving her a 1-0 lead. With just under a minute left in the second, Fuzzan came back to score a single point to lead the round. With time running out, Ralph scored another single point making it 2-1 to secure the Bronze medal. Her come from behind win puts her in a class with only head coach Kerri-Ann Evely and former Memorial wrestler Allison Rockwood as the only female wrestlers to capture national medals for Memorial.

David Forbes

Men’s Swimming

Year: 3

Major: Science

David Forbes is this week’s Memorial University Subway male athlete of the week for his strong showing in the pool at the CIS Championships last weekend in Calgary, Alberta. Racing in his third straight CIS Championship, Forbes showed why he is one of Memorial’s top athletes as he swam to a 17th place finish in the 50m Butterfly with a 26.65. He narrowly missed qualifying for the B final in the 50m butterfly by just .03 of a second, finishing 20th, and was close to season bests in the other 50 meter events. The performance was all the more impressive due to the talented field that featured several Olympic calibre swimmers.
