Subway

Swimmers named Subway Athletes of the Week

Swimmers Kelsie Rogers and Tim Rusted have been named the Memorial University Subway athletes of the week for the week ending Feb 21st, 2010.

Female Athlete of the Week
Kelsie Rogers
Team: Women’s Swimming
Major: Kinesiology

Kelsie Rogers is this week’s Subway Athlete of the week for her outstanding finishes at this past week’s CIS Swimming Championships. This second year standout has been a force to be reckoned with in the pool and is giving Memorial a lot to be excited about for the coming seasons. The native of Wabush, started off this year’s national championships touching the wall 31st in the 100m butterfly with a time of 1:07.59, two hundredths of a second better than her time at the AUS championships. On Friday, Rogers had her busiest day of the meet with two races but still produced impressive finishes with 36th in 50m butterfly at a personal best 30.25 and 25th in the 50m free with a time of 27.22. Rogers then finished her first CIS performance on Saturday with a 43rd place finish in the 100m freestyle. Rogers, along with Leah Tomblin, are the first duo of female competitors to qualify for CIS from Memorial since 2005. Competing in her first CIS Championships in just her second year at the varsity level, Rogers shows major promise and looks to continue her run as one of the country’s top-tier swimmers. The Sea~Hawks can look forward to having this constantly improving and determined competitor for years to come as she looks to make her mark in the swimming program here at Memorial.

Male Athlete of the Week
Tim Rusted
Team: Men’s Swimming
Major: Applied Math

Tim Rusted is this week’s Subway Athlete of the Week for his performance at the CIS Championships in Toronto. Rusted finished his decorated university career in style at his fourth and final CIS Champs appearance in his five years with the Sea~Hawks, breaking personal records while competing in four events. The Conception Bay South native was first in the pool for Memorial this weekend, finishing 40th in the 200m freestyle with a time of 1:58.04; shaving a second off his personal best reached at last year’s CIS Champs. In the second day of the meet Rusted showed his versatility as he finished 48th at 25.11 in the 50m free, an impressive time for any long distance swimmer. Rusted ended his fine varsity career on Saturday in his best event, the 1500m freestyle. Rusted finished off his fine varsity career shaving off 19 seconds from his AUS time in the 1500m freestyle at 16:40.54. The 2007-2008 Athlete of the Year now leaves a legacy of athletic excellence and dedication along with involvement in the Memorial University community. Coach Brad Hutton commented on Rusted’s contribution to the program by saying, “Rusted has been the main building block for the Sea~Hawks swim team over his career with his great dedication and leadership. He has seen the team improve each year and his involvement will continue to be felt as our younger athletes motivate and push their teammates, following in his footsteps.”
