Swimmers named Memorial Athletes of the Week

Leah Tomblin and David Forbes are the Memorial University Subway Athletes of the Week for the period ending February 13, 2011.

Leah Tomblin is this week’s Memorial University Subway Female Athlete of the Week for her outstanding performance at the AUS Championships in Halifax last weekend. The third year from St. John’s earned a total of six trips to the podium, including three individual medals. Tomblin, a third year Geography major, set a Newfoundland provincial record in the 50m backstroke with a time of 30.40 seconds, which was just .35 seconds off the Senior Nationals qualifying time and .3 under her personal best. She finished second overall. Tomblin continued to impress in her specialty, the backstroke, as she went on to capture a gold in the100m backstroke with a time of 1:04.57, and placed second in the 200m backstroke posting a time of 2:19.20. Aside from her individual accolades, Tomblin was a part of the 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle and the 400 medley relay teams that finished third. She will now set her focus on the CIS Championships in Calgary to be held February 24-26.

   

David Forbes

David Forbes is this week’s Subway Memorial University Athlete of the Week for his plethora of podium finishes in the pool at the AUS Championships last weekend in Halifax. Forbes raced his way to seven podium finishes including four individual medals. He swam to a second place finish in the 50m backstroke with a time of 27.11 seconds. He also earned to bronze medals in the 50m butterfly with a time of 25.73 and the 50m freestyle with a time of 23.97 seconds. Not content with three individual podium finishes, Forbes finished second in the 100m freestyle posting a time of 51.56. The silver medal gave Forbes four individual medals, that coupled with a second place finishes as part of the 400m freestyle and 800m freestyle relay team and a bronze medal with the 400m medley relay team, translates into a successful weekend to say the least for the third year Science major. Forbes will represent the Sea~Hawks in Calgary February 24-26 in the CIS Championships.
