Female Athlete of the Week
Erin Mullaley
Team: Women’s Basketball
Major: Education
Erin Mullaley is this week’s Subway Athlete of the Week for
the fantastic performance in the final home weekend of her
memorable Sea~Hawks career. Mullaley was everywhere on the court in
Saturday night’s 85-72 victory over UNB; whether it was
diving for a loose ball, knocking down a 3 pointer, or causing
havoc on the defensive end. Erin went 4-8 from downtown while
dishing out 3 assists and collecting two steals in a team-high 35
minutes of play. Mullaley’s career with the Sea~Hawks was
honoured by Coach Doug Partridge after the game. Erin then took to
the mic, thanking the fans, her coach, and teammates for their
support during her time spent in the red and white. The Freshwater
native continued her stellar play into Sunday’s action as she
was named the player of the game for her 9 point, 8 assist, and 6
steal performance in the decisive 91-57 win over the Varsity Reds.
Visibly having fun out on the court as always, Mullaley subbed out
in the final moments of Sunday’s game to a standing ovation
as the fan’s returned her thanks for a truly special career
with the Sea~Hawks.
Male Athlete of the Week
Mike Helsby
Team: Men’s Basketball
Major: History
Men’s basketball rookie Mike Helsby is this week’s
Subway Athlete of the Week for his exceptional play this weekend in
a double header against the UNB Varsity Reds. Helsby was a major
factor in Saturday’s 70-58 win, knocking down key free throws
in the final minutes of the game that gave Memorial the separation
they needed to collect their second win of the season. This
impressive rookie from Waterloo teamed with Jason Shepherd to lead
the double-headed charge in scoring by dropping 20 points on 6-9
from the field while going 8-10 from the charity stripe. On Sunday,
Helsby switched roles from scorer to facilitator as he scored 15
points with 5 assists and 2 steals on the afternoon. This 6’4
shooting guard continues to show his versatility on the court and
is developing into a major threat on both ends of the floor for
this young Sea~Hawks team.
