Subway Athletes of the Week Feb 1, 2010
Volleyball player Erin Bursey and wrestler Robbie Zadra have been named the Memorial University Subway athletes of the week for the week ending Feb 1st, 2010.
Female Athlete of the Week
Erin Bursey
Team: Women’s Volleyball
Major: Psychology
Erin Bursey is this week’s Memorial University Subway female athlete of the week for her performance in the Sea~Hawk’s final home game matches of the season against UNB. On Saturday night Bursey played with poise and efficiency against the Reds, converting on key points when the ‘Hawks needed it the most. Bursey had a team-high 13.5 points in Memorial’s close 3-2 loss on Saturday, also putting forth a formidable defensive effort with 13 digs on the match. The Weybridge native continued her excellent play into Sunday as she led all ‘Hawks with 8 kills while totalling 13 digs on the match once again. It may have been a rough weekend for the Sea~Hawks, but the feisty play from this constantly improving sophomore was a major bright spot moving forward in the season.
Male Athlete of the Week
Robbie Zadra
Team: Men’s Wrestling
Major: Science
Robbie Zadra is this week’s Subway Memorial University
Athlete of the week for his outstanding finishes at the UNB Open.
This impressive rookie has made waves for the Sea~Hawks wrestling
team with his silver medal performance in the Junior Eastern
Canadian Championships. With five other wrestlers competing in his
weight class, coming into the weekend at 76 kg, Zadra was a force
to be reckoned with on the mat, losing only to the eventual gold
medalist. As the youngest on the team, the Barrie, Ontario native
also grappled with wrestlers from UNB and the Metro Amateur
Wrestling Club (MAWC) in the senior age group. His closest match
was against MAWC, where the final score was three to three in the
favour of the opponent; earning him a 7th place finish. This would
be the last tournament before the CIS Qualifiers back at the
University of New Brunswick later this month, where the top two in
each weight class qualify for CIS Championships in March.
