Pope and Hamlyn Subway Athletes of the Week
(Sept. 9, 2013) Memorial soccer players Jane Pope and Matthew Hamlyn are this week’s Memorial University Subway Athletes of the Week.
Jane Pope | Women’s Soccer
Program of Study: Science
Highly touted rookie Jane Pope is the Memorial University female athlete of the week for her performance in a pair of Sea-Hawk’s wins over Saint Mary’s this weekend. On Saturday in the series opener Jane wasted no time scoring her first career goal, notching the eventual game-winner in the third minute of play, in a 3-0 Memorial victory. In the twentieth minute Pope again broke through the Saint Mary’s defence, scoring her second goal of the game. Pope also found herself involved in the third Memorial scoring play, as her cross attempt was inadvertently redirected into the net by a Saint Mary’s defender. On Sunday she played another strong game, setting up the winning goal in Memorial’s 2-0 win over Saint Mary’s.
Matthew Hamlyn | Men’s Soccer
Program of Study: Pharmacy
Matthew Hamlyn is the Memorial University male athlete of the week for his steady performance in the Sea-Hawks home opening weekend against Saint Mary’s. Hamlyn, a fourth year from St. John’s, showed his versatility this weekend as he played at the centreback position for the first time as a Sea-Hawk, filling in for the injured Greg Reid. Hamlyn’s sound technical game and good decision-making are critical to the team’s success this season. The pharmacy student also is a team leader and has played a key role in building camaraderie on the roster this season.
