Sea~Hawks Soccer Players Nab Player of the Week Honors

Soccer players Jennifer Burry and Steven DeLong are the Memorial University Athletes of the Week for the period ending September 19th, 2011.

Jennifer Burry

Year: 2

Major: Nursing

Jennifer Burry is this week's Memorial University Subway female Athlete of the Week for her play during the Sea~Hawks first road trip of the season. During Saturday's game against a tough CBU squad, Burry was a work horse on the front line, leading the attack for red and white. Despite the loss, Burry maintained composure throughout the match, keeping her team within striking distance until a late CBU attack sealed the deal. Her hard work and determination throughout the match earned her player of the game honors. In the second game of the road trip against a hard-nosed St. FX team, the second year nursing student penetrated the defensive line early for some scoring chances. In the second half of play Burry put forth a resilient effort, as she quickly recovered from a nasty head on collision with one the X-Women players. Sea~Hawks head coach Walt Mavin was thoroughly impressed with the play of his second year forward stating "she ran miles this weekend, and played very hard up front". The team has a bye week this weekend, and will resume play at the end of the month as they are scheduled to hit the road once again, as they tangle with Saint Mary's and Acadia.

Steven DeLong

Year: 3

Major: Arts

Steven DeLong is this week's Memorial University Subway male Athlete of the Week. In Saturday's contest versus the Capers, 'Stevie D' continued his scoring ways, netting his second goal of the season in the 87th minute. Unfortunately the late tally was not enough as CBU escaped with the 3-1 win. After leading the team in scoring last season with 6 goals, DeLong has been the lone goal scorer for the Sea-Hawks so far this season and it hasn't been easy as he has been blanketed by the best defenders the opposition can throw at him.
