Sea~Hawks take home conference awards

Vicki Thistle

Thistle and Mullaley named All-Stars; Parsons on Rookie Team

Three members of the Memorial Sea~Hawks women’s basketball team were recognized with awards in an announcement made by Atlantic University Sport (AUS) today. Vicki Thistle and Erin Mullaley were both named to the AUS second all-star team while Jennifer Parsons was named to the all-rookie team.

Thistle led the second place Sea-Hawks in scoring (15.1 points per game) in 2009-10. She is second on the team in rebounding with 6.1 per game. Her aggressive play finds her on the free throw line a team-leading 5.8 times per game. Last season Thistle, a native of St. John’s, was named a first team all-star and became only the fourth Memorial women’s basketball player to be named an All-Canadian when she was named to the second team. Thistle is a great all-around athlete and was a member of the Sea~Hawks women’s soccer team this season.

Mullaley added 9.5 points per and ranked fifth in AUS assists with 3.6 per game. She was also fourth in the conference in three-point percentage, connecting on 36.5% from long range. In her last season with the Sea~Hawks Mullaley took on a leadership role and was the catalyst to the Memorial defensive pressure. Mullaley will attempt to end her varsity career this weekend with her fourth AUS championship.

Parsons earned her position on the conference all-rookie team by playing in all twenty of the Sea~Hawks regular season games, and starting in six. Parsons, who is from Pouch Cove, gave coach Doug Partridge a reliable player who would contribute defensively when called upon. Parsons finished the season with averages of 3.9 points per game and 3.2 rebounds per game. It was the fourth season that the AUS recognized an all-rookie team. Parsons joins teammates Thistle, Ally Forsey and Ericka Gratton as the only Sea~Hawks to be named to the team.
