Sea~Hawks Soccer Teams Looking to Build Upon Early Success
The Men's and Women's Soccer teams are going to face a stiff test this weekend as they travel to Nova Scotia to face the Cape Breton Capers and St. Francis X-Men and X-Women on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Also on Sunday September 18 the Sea~Hawks will be participating in the 31st Annual Terry Fox Run at King George the Fifth Field. The Sea~Hawks will be assisting the Terry Fox Foundation in fulfilling Terry Fox's dream of keeping the Marathon of Hope going. SEA~HAWKS WOMEN
The Sea~Hawks Women (1-0-1) are faced with the arduous task of playing the last two defending AUS Champions. The young Sea~Hawks team first approach will be tested fast and furiously on Saturday as CBU is coming into the game very well rested and will be well prepared to unleash their high powered offence including St. John's own Erika Lannon. The Sea~Hawks will counter with an equally assertive and steady defence as savvy captain Laura Tilley and second year Maria Oliver should set the tempo defensively. Watch for third year defender and co-captain Lauren Windsor to continue to solidify the back line along with 1st year mid fielder Nicole Jesso as both players made aggressive blocks on two point blank shots following a free kick deep in their zone early in last Sunday's win. On offence the continued maturation of Heather Williams and Jennifer Burry should allow forward Maxine Morris to free up some space to manoeuvre and get some shots on goal. The Sea~Hawks balanced attack will have to continue to be steady and make their strikes at opportune times if they wish to push the well rested defending champs on their home field.
On Sunday the Sea~Hawks will face the X-Women in Antigonish, NS. The X-Women are coming off a draw with Acadia and play them again on Friday night. The STFX games will be webcast on SSN Canada and be a great opportunity for fans who missed the home openers to see first year players Alexe Morgan , Janine Battcock, and Sea~Hawks female athlete of the week Jenna Munden. Sunday's game will be available on webcast live, http://www.ssncanada.ca/game/2901 It will be a great opportunity for the Sea~Hawks to pick up another win against one Newfoundland's own as they face Gonzaga High School grad and second year keeper Maris Miller.
For the first time in years Memorial will be travelling with two extra bodies as the Friends of Soccer booster club has worked feverishly to ensure Coach Walt Mavin can field the strongest team on the road, it will also permit him to travel two keepers which is a luxury given the talent and depth the Sea~Hawks have with Simone Quinlan and Keira Eavis sharing the duties. The extra bodies should benefit the young roster and will give this cohesive unit a chance to build and develop their chemistry and familiarity with one another along with providing invaluable experience for the first years getting their first taste of life on the road.
SEA~HAWKS MEN
The defensively minded Sea~Hawks will be put to the test this weekend as they kick off against two offensive teams in CBU and STFX as both sides scored 4 goals apiece in their respective season openers. On Saturday the men kick off at 3:15 against a well rested Caper side that netted 4 goals in their season opening victory over Acadia. The Sea~Hawks will have to do a better job of generating quality scoring opportunities if leading goal scorer Steven Delong is to continue his trend of timely scoring. Undoubtedly, a supporting cast will have to emerge upfront as the Capers are touting a 6'4, 220 pound starting keeper from Liverpool, England. In Sunday's 1-0 defeat to UNB the Sea~Hawks struggled to find consistency but the coaching staff is confident that the team can build upon the consistent play of their Captain Ryan Yetman as they look to shut down Capers midfielder Silvano Rajkovic who netted two goals including the game winner in their season opener.
On Sunday the Men also travel to STFX where their game will be webcast at 3:15 pm http://www.ssncanada.ca/game/2902/ The Men will be playing another high powered offence as the X-men were able to come from behind to down Acadia last weekend winning 4-3. Alec Benson (7) of the Sea~Hawks should have an extra gear on Sunday as playing the X-Men is an opportunity for the Antigionish native to play in front of friends and family and should give the Sea~Hawks a morale boost while playing in the hostile confines of Oland field. The Sea~Hawks will be facing defender Brien Pattenden of Corner Brook, NL who is a first year athlete at St. Francis Xavier. The men with great support from Sea~Hawks Friends of Soccer will also be travelling two extra bodies this weekend giving coach Scott Betts added flexibility as he prepares his team for what will hopefully become a deep playoff run.
