CBU look real strong as the Capers down the Sea~Hawks

The Cape Breton University Capers were chomping at the bit awaiting their second games of the regular season. The Capers put forth a commanding and respectful effort as both Sea~Hawks teams fell to the Capers in game action earlier this evening.

In women's action the Sea~Hawks faced what coach Walt Mavin feels is one of the strongest CBU sides in recent years. Not too shabby considering they are the defending champions. The Capers scored two goals early in the first half and the Sea~Hawks were able to keep the high powered attack at bay with second year keeper Keira Eavis making key saves heading into the half. In the second half the young Sea~Hawks who were nipped by the flu bug and injury bug just prior to leaving the province saw one of their week one standouts Nicole Jesso leave the game due to an undisclosed injury. As the second half progressed coach Mavin got creative with his roster making strategic moves to generate some scoring chances, the move worked allowing the Sea~Hawks to get close at times. However, the back line was exposed as Lauren Windsor had been moved up and Maria Oliver was unable to travel due to injury so CBU once again made very quick transitions for some quick strikes. The Sea~Hawks did end up losing 5-0 but the experience should only help the young team as they head into their game versus the X-Women on Sunday, The Game is scheduled to start at 1:30pm Newfoundland time and can be seen live at http://www.ssncanada.ca/game/2901

In Men's action the Capers socred two quick goals 20 seconds apart to start the first half with a strong statement versus the Sea~Hawks. Last season Memorial was able to steal a 3-2 victory from CBU on the Capers home turf. However, in 2011 history would not repeat itself as the Capers continued to bring the play to our men's side as they scored once more in the second half before the Sea~Hawks answered as they lost 3-1. Steven Delong netted his second of the season in the 87th minute hopefully re-igniting the Sea~Hawks offence as they head into action on Sunday afternoon at 3:30pm Newfoundland versus the X-Men. You can follow along live at home as the game will be broadcast on http://www.ssncanada.ca/game/2902

If on Sunday morning you would like to see the other Sea~Hawks teams in action come on down and participate in the 31st Annual Terry Fox Run. Registration begins at 10:00am at King George the Fifth Field in St. John's and the event marks the first of many for the Sea~Hawks as they look to repeat their performance from last year of over 4300 volunteer hours. After the run don't forget to tune into the soccer games at 1:30pm and 3:30pm.
