AUS renames student-athlete community service award in honour of Erin Bursey
(HALIFAX, N.S.) - On the eve of the 2012-13 women's volleyball season, Atlantic University Sport is pleased to announce that the AUS women's volleyball student-athlete community service award has been renamed in honour of former Memorial Sea-Hawks player Erin Bursey.
Bursey, a two-time CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Academic all-Canadian and a captain with Sea-Hawks women's volleyball team, passed away earlier this year following a pedestrian vehicle accident.
Following their annual pre-season meeting, the eight AUS women's volleyball coaches forwarded this special request to the AUS management council last month and it was unanimously passed at the Athletic Director level.
"Erin was a gifted student-athlete and youthful leader who embodied everything the AUS student-athlete community service award represents," says Phil Currie, Executive Director of Atlantic University Sport. "Our members felt it was appropriate to attach Erin's name to this prestigious award and we are very proud to be able to recognize her contributions to Memorial and Atlantic University Sport with this honour."
Bursey was a multi-scholarship award winner at Memorial, and recently received the prestigious Frank T. Butler Memorial Scholarship, presented to a student-athlete that best combines athletic commitment, academic success and contribution as an ambassador in the community.
She had recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Psychology and was considering applying to medical school.
"Erin epitomized the definition of student-athlete," says Michelle Healey, Director of Athletics at Memorial. "While her athletic and academic achievements at Memorial speak for themselves, she also left an amazing mark on the multiple community groups that she gave her time to as a volunteer."
Memorial's alumni affairs office has established the Erin Bursey Memorial Leadership Award and donations can be made either by phone at 1-877-700-4081 or 709-864-4354 or online at www.munalum.ca/Giving-to-Memorial/
Memorial University will host the 2013 Subway AUS women's volleyball championship, February 15-17, 2013. The 2012-13 regular season kicks off tomorrow (Friday) in Halifax as Saint Mary's and Dalhousie co-host the first interlock event of the season against teams from the RSEQ conference.
