Trio Set to Take Flight with Sea~Hawks this Fall

(March 25, 2014.) Memorial’s women’s soccer team has received commitments from a trio of 2013 Canada Games team members. Emily Bailey, Teri Murphy and Melissa Reid have all committed to the Sea~Hawks for this fall adding to a very talented group of players.

By signing all three Mavin has added depth to the foundation of a very competitive program that finished 5-4-4 last season. Mavin views the signings as “A big win for us. I expect all three players to make an immediate impact on our team in September.”

In choosing Memorial the trio will be reunited with many of their 2013 Canada Games teammates who have been training together since the age of 14.  The trio bring a winning attitude forged by hard work and hustle, traits instilled in them through their time with Canada Games Head Coach Jake Stanford.

Bailey a striker who will graduate from Mount Pearl Senior High. She will pursue her Commerce Degree at Memorial’s Faculty of Business. Her presence up front brings added depth and a scoring touch that should keep opposing defenses on their heels.

Teri Murphy of O’Donel High School in Mount Pearl brings versatility that could find her at any position on the field. Coach Mavin sees Murphy excelling as an attacking middle or on the wing. Relying on her strength and fitness, Murphy also brings a consistent scoring touch that will provide the Sea~Hawks the ability to control the pace of play throughout the upcoming season. Murphy will focus on general studies in the fall.

Melissa Reid, who will graduate from Gonzaga High School in St. John’s will pursue a degree in psychology while patrolling the defense as the team’s new centre back. The addition of Reid is important as the Sea~Hawks expect to replace team captain Maria Oliver who will graduate from Memorial this spring.

Fans will get their first chance to see the new look Sea~Hawks at their home opener at King George the Fifth in early September.
