Sea~Hawks Give Reasons to be Joyful.

Sea~Hawks success stories don't always show up in boxscores and often are not attributed to finishing first, pinning an opponent, scoring a goal, hitting a big three or serving up an ace. No, during this season of giving and caring and all year round the Sea~Hawks are always Champions in the community.

During the last number of years Varsity athletes have given thousands of hours and have only been outdone by the thousands of dollars they have raised for various causes, charities, and events. This past fall the Sea~Hawks continued to partner and volunteer with a number of organizations and causes including but not limited to Canadian Blood Services, the Special Olympics, the Terry Fox Run, Rotary Read-A-Long, The Telegram's Raise a Reader and various other community groups, fundraisers and youth camps. Teams have also travelled to communities outside of St. John's while running camps for Volleyball and Basketball. There have been a number of highlights this semester that have been captured in photos.

Volunteer Times

The Sea~Hawks kicked off the fall term lending a helping hand with the Terry Fox Run. By now most of our athletes are too young to have witnessed the journey that Terry took the country by storm in 1980. However his legacy significantly impacts the Sea~Hawks today, 31 years later.

Captain Breanne Coady and her wrestling teammates took some time away from the mat to help with registration.

Jon Slaney (X-C Team Bronze medalist) keeps an eye on Richard Hibbs (swimming) during registration, while Rookie Lauren Miller (women's volleyball) looks up at the large crowd of people awaiting registration. While below the Men's Basketball team gets the crowd warmed up for the 2011 Terry Fox run around Quidi Vidi Lake.

The Sea~Hawks aren't only about health and fitness as our athletes place a high value on reading and the role of family. We partnered with the Telegram's Raise a Reader program which saw Sea~Hawks athletes stepped up to sell commemorative newspapers on Memorial's Campus to support family literacy programs in our our province. Breanne Coady (wrestling), Victoria Ralph (X-C, Wrestling), and Lauren Miller (women's Volleyball) are pictured front and centre.

The women's basketball team travelled to Harbour Grace for a fun filled camp followed by a red and white scrimmage and some good ol' Harbour Grace hospitality.

Rotary Read - A- Long

One of the Sea~Hawks favourite endeavours is the Rotary Read - A - Long program in which Sammy the Sea~Hawk and athletes visit various schools and read to future Sea~Hawks and now Ice Caps too.

Grace Fishbein, and Wrestler Dustin Silvey joined Sammy and Amanda Martret on the first of many visits this School year. Clearly our province is big enough for all the goodwill the Sea~Hawks, Ice Caps and Rotary have to share this year.

Our next visit is January 9, 2012 at Virginia Park Elementary .

Athletes Council

Through 50/50 fundraisers at Men's and Women's basketball games in 2011-2012 the Athletes Council are fundraising for the Michael Beecher Smith Award as well as various other causes like the Toys for Kids program. The Sea~Hawks partnered with Campus Enforcement and Patrol to provide toys to ensure children from all across the province get a special visit from Santa Claus this Christmas.

The Sea~Hawks also hosted a Teddy Bear Toss during the Men's Volleyball Interlock in November giving the guys even more to smile about during their team picture. The Men's Volleyball team also champion the Adopt-a-Hawk program and are Partners for Life with Canadian Blood Services.

The Sea~Hawks of course can be found everywhere and often take their goodwill beyond the confines of our campus so please continue to follow us in 2012 as we appreciate all of the support that you the fans and community give us.

On behalf of the Memorial University Sea~Hawks please have a Safe Holiday Season and watch for our Holiday Preview on Boxing Day as the Sea~Hawks kick off their Holiday Exhibition schedule on December 28th.
