Julie BettneyMs. Bettney is a former multi-sport athlete at Memorial where she earned a bachelor of Physical Education degree. She is well known locally for her political career and her volunteer work with a number of causes including the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Ms. Bettney graduated from Memorial in 1980 with a bachelor of Physical Education degree. Her passion for physical activity, sports and the outdoors led her to compete as a multi-sport student-athlete in badminton, volleyball, synchronized swimming and field hockey while at Memorial.

After graduation from Memorial Ms. Bettney worked as a teacher before beginning a successful political career that saw her serve municipally in the City of Mount Pearl and provincially in the District of Mount Pearl. During her provincial political career she served as a minister in five portfolios including Works, Services and Transportation Social Services, Status of Women, Health and Community Services, and Tourism, Culture and Recreation.

In 2006, Ms. Bettney founded Avalon Dragon Boating, a dragon boating organization for breast cancer survivors. She remains an active board member and paddler. She is also involved in recruiting prospective sponsors for the dragon boating facility in Paradise, expanding dragon boating to the general public and promoting it to breast cancer survivors in other parts of the province.

She is an active retiree (10 years) and breast cancer survivor (12 years) who maintains an active lifestyle with involvement in scuba diving, sea kayaking, golf, paddling, camping, biking, hiking and skiing.

She was pleased to be recognized as honorary chairperson for the Sea-Hawks Scholarship Golf Tournament.

She said, “Many of the things I learned at MUN which have served me so well in life are things I learned on the playing field, in the pool and on the courts playing varsity sports. It was in this heady environment that I learned about things like leadership, commitment, perseverance, teamwork, and even courage. And the beauty of it is, I really had no idea at the time of the valuable lessons being learned or where they would lead me. What fabulous memories I still enjoy of those days!”
