Nita Chambers (Sutton) Awards Fund

Nita Chambers Sutton Award presentation will take place on November 18th, 2017.  All proceeds from the 50/50 and silent auction will go to boosting the endowment fund established in Nita's honour.  On Nov. 18 and 19, 2017 a Silent Auction will be held at the Memorial University Field House in conjunction with regularly scheduled Alantic University Sport (AUS) Basketball games (Memorial University vs. St. Francis Xavier University). The Auction is being held in support of the Nita Chambers (Sutton) Awards Fund (Est. 2000) which provides financial aid for deserving male and female student-athletes who have graduated from Newfoundland and Labrador High Schools, and who compete for the Memorial Sea-Hawks in the sport of basketball. Wool Trends on 238 Hamilton Ave. in St. John’s is the Project's Cooperating Partner.

The auction will take place from 6:00pm - 9:00pm on Saturday Nov. 18 and from 11:30 am – 3:30 pm on Sunday, Nov. 19. Visa and Mastercard can be accepted onsite. Sixteen knitters from Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia have provided over thirty five colorful, woolen scarves of different lengths for the auction. Many of the scarf color combinations are the same as the school colors of selected local high schools and AUS universities including Memorial. The yarn used in this knitting project is Cascade 220 (Solid), a 100% Peruvian HIGHLAND wool made in Peru and distibuted by Estelle in Canada.

About Nita Chambers Sutton

Nita Chambers (Sutton), a graduate of Stella Maris High School in Trepassey and Memorial Unversity was a spirited and talented participant in basketball at both scholastic and interuniversity levels. As a teacher in Plum Point and Conception Bay South she was a leader in student/community events and as an alumna she was a strong supporter of Memorial University. Nita passed away in 1999 and a number of her family, friends, colleagues and former instructors formed a committee to develop an endowment fund to support the granting of financial awards in her name. Through the efforts of this committee and the support of many businesses and individual donors for a variety of projects, the Fund Capital endowment has now reached over $71,000.

The Nita Chambers (Sutton) Awards Fund (Est. 2000) provides financial assistance to deserving male and female student athletes who are graduates of High Schools in Newfoundland and Labrador and who represent the Memorial University Sea~Hawks in the sport of basketball. Two awards, one to a member of each of the men's and women's varsity teams, are presented annually. The amount of these awards is dependent on the yearly accrued interest on the Fund endowment. Twenty-six awards totaling $29,000 have been provided since the inception of the Fund.
